Workshop Overview

Cognitive Resonance offers workshops to help people better understand how human cognition and generative AI work. Through these, we aim to improve future decisions related to how to build human knowledge, and whether and how generative AI can be useful toward that end.

The current workshop series covers multiple topics, including:

•  The Importance of Knowledge: We explore the science of how humans think and learn, and how we build knowledge over time. We then examine the data that is used to train generative AI models and expose some surprising gaps in their knowledge.

•  Consciousness and Transformation: We dive into the limits of human cognition and our "working memories," and the challenge of prompting effortful thinking. This is compared and contrasted to the process of transformation that generative AI uses to convert human inputs into specific outputs.

•  Cultural Cognition: We examine how human identities and social practices affect our cognitive processes. With this as backdrop, we look at how generative AI often reflects existing social inequities and injustices — and push into other thorny but important ethical concerns.

These workshops are customizable and can be tailored to specific needs and interests of participants. Cognitive Resonance is planning to add additional topic areas in the near future.

Workshop Structure

The workshops are designed using principles of cognitive science, and involve a high degree of participant interaction — they are not lectures. They can be delivered in person or entirely online and are tailored to the interests and questions of those who participate. The full workshop is seven hours.
